Choosing Marble Is About Fit, Not Just Looks
Every marble is beautiful in a showroom. The question is whether it survives your application. A polished white marble that stuns on a feature wall can be the wrong call for a busy kitchen island. This guide walks the decisions that matter.
Start With the Application
- Feature walls and bookmatched panels — almost any marble works; drama is the goal.
- Bathroom vanities and walls — fine, but seal against cosmetics and acids.
- Kitchen islands and counters — expect etching from lemon and wine; choose honed, and accept a lived-in patina, or consider a porcelain slab that mimics marble.
- Floors and high-traffic commercial — specify honed rather than polished so scratches don't telegraph.
Read the Hardness and Porosity
Marble sits at 3–4 on the Mohs scale — softer than granite and sensitive to acids. Denser marbles resist wear better. All marble is porous, so sealing is not optional in wet or food areas.
Finish Changes Everything
Polished deepens colour and reads luxurious but shows every scratch. Honed is matte, forgiving and contemporary. Leathered adds subtle texture and grip. The same slab can feel like three different materials across these finishes.
