Parquet Is Back — and It Is Not Just Oak Anymore
Wood floors bring warmth no tile can match. But "parquet" now covers three very different products — solid, engineered and laminate — and choosing the wrong one for the room is the most common (and expensive) mistake.
Solid, Engineered or Laminate?
- Solid parquet — one piece of hardwood, can be sanded and refinished many times. Best for bedrooms and living rooms in stable, dry climates. Sensitive to humidity swings.
- Engineered parquet — a hardwood wear layer over plywood cross-plies. Far more dimensionally stable, works over underfloor heating, and suits most modern apartments.
- Laminate — a printed decor layer over HDF. No real wood on top, but scratch-resistant and budget-friendly for rentals and high-traffic spaces.
Wood Species and Grade Set the Mood
Oak dominates for a reason — it is hard, forgiving and takes any stain. Walnut reads richer and darker; ash and maple are lighter and contemporary. The grade (select, AB, ABC, rustic) controls how many knots and how much colour variation you see — rustic grades feel handmade, select grades feel calm and uniform.
Finish and Treatment
Matte and oiled finishes look natural and are easy to spot-repair; lacquered/gloss finishes are tougher but harder to touch up. Brushed and hand-scraped textures hide wear in busy homes.
